Full Description

Secluded, within Merrydale, a sheltered valley, near Huddersfield in Yorkshire, Tyas Cottage is adjacent to an ancient, cobbled pack horse road. The abundant natural birdlife of this local beauty spot includes kingfishers, herons and sparrow hawks.
It sleeps six, and has shared access to wonderful gardens which include a millpond, waterfall and stream.
There are loads of things to amuse children, both indoors and outdoors. In particular they all seem to gravitate to the pods next to the millpond and also love playing on the swing over the waterfall. Many adults also spend ages in the pods, are interested in the gardens and, of course, walk up to the pub (or drive if they are infirm because the path through the woodland that leads to the pub is extremely steep).
It is a good base for walking further afield. The Pennine Way is nearby, Merrydale valley leads down to the village, the European designated Special Protection Area for endangered birds (Twite and Curlew, in particular) is within easy walking distance.
The cottage has been elegantly furnished with antiques, and insulated to a high standard. For energy efficiency and comfort, our cottage includes underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove.
There is an impressive antique, carved four poster bed (double) in the master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, an en-suite twin room and a standard twin room with access to a separate shower room.
The large upstairs living room is open to the rafters and opens onto a balcony that in turn leads to a private paved garden. The extremely spacious farmhouse kitchen is often used as a second living room and is ideal for entertaining. Outside you’ll find a BBQ, swinging chairs and a hammock in the garden.

Historical Connection

Tyas Cottage, a combined cottage and barn, is one of 3 properties within an isolated hamlet in Merrydale, near Slaithwaite and Marsden. The other two houses are in permanent occupation. It was here , in the early sixteen hundreds, that the first water powered mill in the Colne Valley was built.

Unusual Building

Built in the early 19th century from honey-coloured stone, Tyas Cottage is Grade 2 listed.
