Full Description

A charming, friendly and historic small town dating from the C9th, Shaftesbury was the inspiration for Thomas Hardy’s ‘Shaston’ and is one of Britain’s oldest towns. Gold Hill was the scene of Ridley Scott’s 1973 Hovis advert and numerous films such as the 1967 version of Far From the Madding Crowd.
Updown Cottage is a luxury self catering holiday cottage to rent on Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. It is rated 5* by Visit Britain with Gold Award, given to only the highest scoring properties in Britain.
The interior design aims to integrate original historic details and antiques with contemporary comfort and convenience.
Sitting Room
The sitting room’s main feature is the inglenook fireplace supported by a massive oak beam with a woodburning stove, basket of logs and obligatory toasting fork. There are 2 generous sofas for sitting with a book, film or simply firelight.
The Music Room
A Challen baby grand piano was the first piece of furniture that we moved into Updown Cottage and has been enjoyed by all from budding musicians to cathedral organists and composers. There is a selection of piano and vocal sheet music in an antique music cabinet. A tweedy sofa provides a quiet place to relax away from televisions.
Updown Cottage has 4 bedrooms (2 kingsize doubles and 2 singles) sleeping up to six + a baby and all are furnished with White Company linen, piles of towels and bathrobes.
There are 3 bath / shower rooms with all natural toiletries supplied.
Wifi, a basket of groceries including 36 Nespresso coffee capsules, a basket of logs, essential cleaning products & condiments are included.
The kitchen is equipped for gourmet meal preparation and there are dining facilities for 12 but equally, should relaxation be the aim, there are superb restuarants, cafes and pubs within a moment’s walk.
Shaftesbury is very well placed for exploring the whole of the south west from Stonehenge, Salisbury and Bath to the Jurassic coast and is only 2 hours from London, the south midlands and Cornwall.

Historical Connection

The cottage dates from the C16th and may well be constructed from materials dating from before that time.
It stands opposite the walls of King Alfred the Great's C9th Abbey.
A tunnel entrance may be seen in the kitchen of the cottage that probably linked with the many tunnels beneath Shaftesbury.
The cottage has a rich history and has functioned as a pilgrim's resting place, butcher and doss house!
